Dalteparin is a heparin with a low molecular weight (LMWH), an anticoagulant that can be safely used in the majority of pregnant women. It binds to antithrombin III, inhibiting the formation of Xa and thrombin. After being administered subcutaneous doses majority of it is completely absorbed, and metabolized by the liver at sites of biotransformation through desulphatation and depolymerization. It is eliminated through the kidneys, urine, gastrointestinal tract and liver. Caution should be taken as overdose can lead to hemorrhages, osteopenia, thrombocytopenia, alopecia, angioedema, and anaphylactic reactions such as skin rash or necrosis. Dalteparin can interact with herbs and supplements, avoid those with anticoagulant and antiplatelet activity such as garlic, ginger, bilberry, danshen, piracetam and ginkgo biloba.
