Norfloxacin is a broad-spectrum fluoroquinolone antibiotic with variable activity against gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria. Typically reserved for the treatment of UTIs due to accumulation in the urine.
Norfloxacin inhibits DNA gyrase (topoisomerase II) and topoisomerase IV. These proteins prevent supercoiling in bacterial DNA. The inhibition of DNA gyrase (topoisomerase II) and topoisomerase IV causes supercoiling of the bacterial DNA. This prevents DNA replication.
