The regulation of the hutCD operon. The operon is inhibited by hutC (Histidine utilization repressor) and activated by high concentrations of histidine. When histidine concentrations are low, hutC binds to the promoter inhibiting crp from transcribing the operon. When histidine concentrations are high, hutC releases the promoter, allowing crp to bind and transcribe the operon. There are two products of the operon: hutC and hutD (Putative histidine utilization protein HutD). The function of hutD is currently unknown.
